Lab Resources

The ECE Senior Projects lab can be found in room 246 Everitt Lab. This lab provides you with a vast array of lab equipment, hardware, and software for your use. See the above links for more details on each of these resources. Also, use the Webcam link above to see how busy the lab is currently.

Lab Rules

Please clean up on your way out of the lab. Cables should be returned to the cable racks, and broken cables should be marked with a red tag or turned in to the Parts Shop or your TA. Do not keep any cables from the lab in your kit or storage locker. This or any other example of bad laboratory etiquette (such as leaving a computer locked to prevent others from getting on while the student is out of the lab for more than five minutes) will lead to a loss of points. Trash and paper recyling bins are available, and wire scraps can go in the big wire scrap box. Books should also be returned to the shelves and kept organized. Do not prop the lab door open. The door is monitored by security personnel, who have a record of all room accesses.

NOTE: Campus-wide safety regulations require that there be at least two persons in the lab whenever work is being done outside of normal business hours (5:00pm to 7:00am).

Food and drink are not allowed on lab benches anywhere on campus. You may bring in snacks, but please consume them away from the lab bench. Of course, trash should be thrown out immediately.

Lab Equipment Rules

Do not remove any equipment from the lab. Students may not change the connections on equipment without TA approval. Any approved changes that are made should be undone before leaving the lab. If a bench instrument is malfunctioning, a red repair tag should be placed on it. The red tags may be found in a drawer by the resistors and capactitors. This alerts the staff to the problem, and it is usually fixed by the Parts Shop within a day. The Parts Shop or your TA can also be notified for more urgent needs.

When using a laboratory equipment for the first time, please ask a TA for help. If you are inexperienced with a piece of hardware, do not assume that it is broken just because you cannot figure out how to use it. If you break any laboratory equipment, you must tell your TA within 1 business day. Any attempts to conceal breakage will result in an F in the course.

Room Access

The lab room (246 Everitt Lab) is on the electronic key-card system. The Department automatically adds room access to the building and the lab for all students on the roster. Swipe your I-Card to gain access to the room. If the door does not open after several attempts, you may need to get a replacement card. Room access is automatically restricted to faculty and TAs during official breaks (i.e. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring Break).

Computer access

Your lab account includes a private, password-protected, storage space on virtual drive "W:", available from any machine in the ECE domain. This space may be cleared at the end of the semester. The C: drive should not be used for any personal material, since it is unprotected and is available only on the particular machine where it was originally stored. A particular computer may be cleared and reconfigured at any time for maintenance reasons.
